Last weekend, an anonymous woman in La Loma Hills, California decided to take the advice “Pay it Forward” literally when she covered the bill for 25 firefighters eating at a local diner.

The firefighter had just spent the entire day battling a 70-acre wide wildfire near San Bernadino, California (About 70 miles west of Los Angelas), in weather reaching well over 100 degrees. Their hard work and determination paid off, and the firefighters were able to not only get the fire under control, but completely extinguish it, potentially saving countless homes, and even lives in the process.

Immediately after this hard day’s work, the men and women who had succeeded in putting the wild fire out decided to celebrate by going to a local Denny’s diner for a hearty meal. An unidentified woman was so grateful for what they had done for her community, that on the spot she picked up their bill, without ever telling them who she was.

According to the Fire Department Public Information Officer, Captian Tom DeBellis, the woman told Denny’s workers she, “wanted to pay for the firefighters’ meals, but didn’t want to be recognized.” She somehow managed to pull off this amazing feat, because, by the time the firefighters had figured out that their bill had been covered, the woman was long gone, with only her incredible act of generosity and kindness left behind.

All in all, the mysterious woman paid 355 dollars for the bill to cover the full expense of the meals and drinks for 25 people, as well as leaving a fifty dollar tip for the waitstaff of Denny’s who had been attending to the needs of the group. However, this was not the end of her incredible generosity that day, she also purchased and left a gift card for 100 dollars in case any other firemen or women came in and wished to have dessert.

Although we will never know the identity of the mysterious benefactor at Denny’s that day, her simple act of recognition, and show of gratitude, for the men and women, who spend their days battling California’s often crippling wild fire problem has gone viral. With the story being picked up by CNN, as well as other national and local news outlets all over the country.

A spokesperson for the fire department said that, in a time when firefighters have to battle sometimes dozens of wildfires a week, the woman gave the firefighters a huge morale boost, and this act is sure to be remembered and talked about for a long time to come.
