The real-life Robin Hood and Maid Marian exist, and they live in Nottingham, England. Robin Hood uniquely met his wife, Maid Mariam, while on the stage following his passion for acting. Mr. Pollard had been playing Robin Hood for over 20 years. Ms. Pollard played Maid Marian. She and Mr. Pollard worked together for years as friends on stage even though their characters were very much in love. Eventually, this love interest on stage poured into real life. The actors decided it was time to try to be together not just on stage, but off as well.
“And then five years ago, we just kind of went ‘You know this is pretending to be in love thing that we’re doing? I quite like you’ and we got together,” Mr. Pollard said.
The couple eventually took their love story to the next level. They decided it was time to get married. Guests at the wedding included the Pied Piper of Hamelin. Even Sherriff of Nottingham, one of Robin Hood’s enemies, has congratulated the couple.
Mr. Pollard and Mrs. Pollard also have a child together. When she was born, Mr. Pollard joked about naming her after one of Robin Hood’s Marry Men and calling her Little John. Luckily for the baby girl’s sake, she was officially named Scarlett Louise. She is now three-years-old.
Mrs. Pollard not only played Maid Marian but also worked as a professional job too. She works as a researcher at the University of Nottingham in human and molecular genetics.
Now, here is where the perfect on-stage and off-stage love story takes a turn. In 2015, Mrs. Pollard was diagnosed with breast cancer. Mr. Pollard created a GoFundMe account to raise money for his wife.
Astonishingly the GoFundMe raised over 6,000 British pounds, “We thought we might get a couple of hundred pounds, but the goodwill Sally has engendered means we’ve raised well over £6,000,” Mr. Pollard said.
The money, however, will go to charities that helped Ms. Pollard stay at home during her final months. Mrs. Pollard passed away at their home on 16 June 2017.
The real-life Robin Hood is very proud of his wife’s accomplishments. “Sally was absolutely brilliant, not just as a Maid Marian, which she loved doing, being part of the Robin Hood legend and representing the city, but she was a great scientist, teacher, working at the university and helping others,” Mr. Pollard said.
