When it comes to being a policeman, there are a lot of days that are tough, and a lot of duties that require dealing with people at their worst. Sometimes though, you get to be a hero and make all the difference in someone’s day. That was the case recently in Logan, Utah, when a blind woman, unsure of what to do and wanting to cook some food for herself, called 911 to report that her microwave was broken.
Although the woman stated that she didn’t have a real emergency, she did need to eat, and instead of ignoring her call or telling her to call an appliance repair man that would cost money she might not have had, the Logan police department stepped up to help, and dispatched officer Kristian Johnson to see what he could do.
Once there, Officer Johnson, a kind and helpful man by nature, immediately created a rapport with the woman and put her at ease about having to dial 911 in order to get her appliance fixed. He then used his skills to fix the microwave, but instead of immediately leaving after fixing that problem, he spent more time with the woman and asked her if there was anything else he could do for her.
Officer Johnson likely thought the woman might need some other appliance fixed or some help with basic household needs that are hard for her to do living alone and blind, but he was surprised with a request for something much more basic – the woman wanted him to sing to her. Never one to back away from a request, Officer Johnson told the woman he isn’t a great singer, but was completely willing to serenade her if that is what she wanted.
The woman happily agreed, and told Officer Johnson she would like to hear “You Are My Sunshine.” He launched into it with gusto, and sang the entire song to the woman just as she had hoped. Once he was done fixing her microwave, and singing to her, the woman was overjoyed with the kindness she had been shown by the officer and vowed to never forget that morning’s events.
