A Canadian woman who recently wed decided she wanted to do something a little different. For her, something new was getting a new husband, so that was taken care of. For her, something blue, she picked blue bridesmaids dresses. For something borrowed, she adopted traditions and ideas she had seen in other weddings, so she had that covered. For something old though, she decided she wanted to be unique and special; that’s when she thought, what could be more special than having her favorite person, her 92-year-old Grandmother, as one of her bridesmaids.
The grandmother, May Smith, was beyond excited for the big day. She found out about a year before the wedding that her granddaughter wanted her to be a bridesmaid, and she spent the next year preparing, and telling everyone about how she was going to be in a wedding in July. She had been a bridesmaid many times in her youth but was absolutely tickled at the chance to do it again.
In keeping with the colors of the wedding May wore a blue denim skirt and white shirt, and to bring it all together, a blue-ribbon in her hair to match the other bridesmaids. She also rode the party bus with them because, although she is significantly older than everyone else in the wedding party was, she wanted to do absolutely everything that the rest of the crew was doing. She did opt to take shots of ice wine instead of the hard stuff some of the other bridesmaids were imbibing, but didn’t shy away from the dance floor, or donating to the stag and doe.
The bride, Amanda Scott, sees her grandmother about once a week and is extremely close to her. She talks to her about everything and calls her a hero. Amanda says, “She’s getting to an age where I think, how much longer she might be here? I thought, how special would it be if this could be something she does at this stage. I mean, how many women get to be a bridesmaid at 92?”
In the end not only were Amanda and her grandmother happy with how the wedding turned out, but Amanda says her grandmother was the best bridesmaid she had, adding, “She’s done it a billion times, maybe that’s why.”
This wedding truly was a special day for granddaughter and grandmother alike!
