Robert Taylor, a man from Idaho, recently thought he was going on a one-of-a-kind a journey, a 100-mile bike ride for charity, but ended up finding himself on quite another, the road to pet ownership. Taylor is a giving man, and that is why he decided to spend his free time on a Saturday doing the charity bike race, called the “2017 HeART of Idaho Century Ride.”
The ride itself is an incredible journey, described on the event Facebook page as “An annual fundraiser for The Art Museum of Eastern Idaho. The event has been greeted with wild enthusiasm and draws riders ranging in age from 5 to 85 from several states. The ride follows the scenic Snake River south of Idaho Falls, through verdant farmland, Grand Teton views, and striking desert vistas.” Taking that into consideration, Robert knew he was going to create lifelong memories, but had no idea just how unique this ride would be.
When Robert pulled off the trail to take a break about 20 miles into the race, he got off his bike and drank some water, and took time to take in his surroundings. That is when, from behind a truck parked near by, a four-month-old puppy sauntered over and walked right up to Robert. At first, Robert was confused and thought the puppy might belong to the truck owners, however it soon became apparent to him, due to the condition the puppy was in, and how he was covered in mange, that this was an abandoned dog.
As Robert looked down at the puppy, who was by this time rubbing against his legs and making his way into Robert’s heart, he knew that out of nowhere a new member of his family had shown up, and was coming home with him. Being the charity minded man that he is, Robert didn’t stop at just adopting the puppy, who is now recovering with vet care and a lot of love in his new home. He set up a GoFundMe account that will help with his new friend’s vet care, but will also be used for the local humane society, and to bring attention to the dangers of abandoning unwanted pets.
“There’s no food or water out there,” Robert said, “There are other options. Abandoning them on the side of the road or thinking they are going to find a home is just not an option or a realistic story.”
This amazing story is bringing attention to this worthy cause, but that isn’t the only thing Robert is asking his community to help with. He also wants help naming his new pet, and can’t wait to update the public once the puppy has a forever name to go with his forever home.
