Social Media has a way of connecting people who may never meet in person. We can ask questions in an online forum and receive help and answers from people all over the world. One man posted a question about how to retrieve some recordings of his wife singing he had found, on Reddit and someone responded and was able to walk him through the process. This may not sound so unique or special, but the sad part of this story is that the reason retrieving those recordings was so important to him, was because his wife had passed away.
These days you don’t hear of too many women passing away during childbirth, but Jared Buhanan-Decker experienced this tragedy. His wife was a talented singer and had several videos on YouTube of her singing, but he found more recordings that he wasn’t able to hear. While his wife did pass away, his son James survived the birth, and he wanted to give him the chance to hear his mother sing.
Buhanan-Decker wrote on Reddit that he had an odd request. He had found music of his wife Sharry singing, but it was in a file format he couldn’t access. On a whim, he reached out to the Reddit Community to see if anyone could help him. Within hours he had people reach out to him. They helped him by using a shared Google Doc. After a few hours, he received the converted files back in the shared drive. This will now allow his son to still hear lullabies from his mom, even though she can no longer be with him. It’s not every day that someone will take time out of their day to convert files for a complete stranger, but as Jared said, “People can be very kind in the face of tragedy.”
Doctors believe that Sharry died because of an amniotic fluid embolism. The birth was traumatic, and James had to be delivered via an emergency C-Section. Because of how traumatic it was the doctors feared the worst for James’ health including potential blindness, never walking, being able to eat on his own, learning disabilities, and several others. According to Jared’s blog that was originally started by Sharry, after James was delivered, they sent him to the NICU where they started a procedure called “induced hypothermia” where they cool the body temperature for 72 hours to slow down metabolism hoping to stop any potential brain damage. This seemed to work because after staying in the NICU James went home and had defied all odds.
Jared said that Sharry was a person who cared deeply about things and wanted to make a difference for the better. Losing a spouse or partner is always a tragedy. Losing someone to childbirth is not something we think or fear much anymore so to lose someone on the day that is supposed to be the happiest day of your life can be even more shocking. Thankfully in this story, social media played a positive role in Jared’s recovery and made it so that he could share his wife’s voice with his son.
