It All Started With A Taco: Bus Driver Hand-Makes Gifts For All Of Her Passengers

It all started with a taco. That’s how Trudy Serres, A school bus driver in Wisconson, describes a series of events that led to her creating unique and personalized toys for each of the 34 students who ride her bus route.

Trudy had taught 10-year-old Vincent Lamon’s older brother how to crochet, but upon seeing all the different things she could create, Vincent asked her to make him a crochet taco to celebrate his favorite food. It took her only two days to complete the request, and Vincent could not have been happier.
“I made the taco and gave it to Vincent in the morning, and every student that got on after him — he had to show them, and said, ‘Look what Mrs. Trudy made,'” Serres said.

Once the other students saw the amazing things their bus driver could do with crochet, they all wanted something of their own. Unable to turn anyone down, Trudy went seat to seat and let each student make a special request.

What started with a taco has led to animals, footballs, Star Wars characters, and some unique designs that Trudy and the students came up with together. The only constant was that each toy would be unique, and custom made with love from Trudy.

Trudy was able to give every student their unique toy before summer break, and now she has heard from the parents that the kids are using them to enjoy their time off, saying, “Found out from parents that some take them to bed, some go to church with them. Some had to go on vacation with them. Makes my heart melt that these little items mean so much to these beautiful children.”

Not only are the kids and parents delighted with the incredible thoughtfulness and generosity of their bus driver, but the school administration is also taking notice. The school principal, Brian Stuckey, spent time reminiscing about students coming up to him to show off their toys, saying, “One day a boy came up to me and said, ‘Mr. Stuckey, look at what my bus driver made me!’ and he showed me his stuffed animal Trudy had created just for him. The boy was so proud, and you could tell the pride he had in this little gift. The last few years we have been working to build connections and relationships between our school and our fabulous bus drivers and Trudy has taken that to a whole new level.”

For the children who are lucky enough to have Trudy Serres as a school bus driver, all the thanks and payment she needs, according to her, is being able to see the joy and happiness brought to the children by the things she has made them.
