The World’s Ugliest Dog Contest is a now world famous event held every single year during the Sonoma-Marin Fair, in Petulama California, where people from all across the globe bring their pups to see who has the ugliest mug. This contest usually happens around the end of June, and is a summer event the entire region now looks forward to, with the winner generally getting national news. The winner not only gets to take home the title of World’s Ugliest Dog, but the owner of the winning pooch gets a check for 1,500 dollars, a trophy they can proudly display in their home, and a free trip to New York City. The event has become so popular that not only do thousands attend every year, but the fair now has an “all day dog lovers festival!” the day of the event contest.
Here are the winners from the last six years, for you to judge just how ugly, or adorable, they really are!
Yoda (2011)
Yoda won the award in 2011. Yoda was a Chinese crested and chihuahua mix, whose owner originally found her behind an apartment building, and “mistook her for a rat”
Mugly (2012)
In 2012 Mugly took home the award, coming all the way from the U.K. For the chance to win the title. Mugly, also a Chinese Crested mix, had also won the award for Britain’s Ugliest Dog in 2005, so is truly a world champion.
Walle (2013)
In 2013 the reign of Chinese Crested came to an end, when Walle took home the prize. Walle is a mutt, and as one of the judges that year said, “This dog looked like he’s been Photoshopped with pieces from various dogs and maybe a few other animals,”
Peanut (2014)
A puppy called Peanut won the prize in 2014, and although his breed is unknown, he does have quite the back story. Peanut was a burn victim, and a rescue and Peanut’s owner used the 1500 dollar prize money for vet bills for other doggies in need.
Quasi Modo (2015)
The 2015 winner was the aptly named Quasi Modo. Quasi is a pit bull Dutch shepherd mix who was born with a spine deformity, leaving him hunchbacked. Because of this, he was abandoned at a shelter, but the story has a fairy tale ending, with Quasi being adopted by a kind vet who fell in love and winning the illustrious contest.
Sweepee Rambo (2016)
The 2016 winner, Sweepee Rambo, was another in the long line of Chinese Crested winners. Sweepee is described as a “ride or die chick” by her owner, and rides to work with him everyday on the back of his motorcycle.
Martha (2017)
Finally, this years winner, Martha, is described as “gassy, droopy, and gorgeous”. Martha is a rescue, who when found was almost blind from neglect, but now lives on a picturesque farm, and leads a life other dogs would envy.
The runners of the World’s Ugliest Dog contest hope that this competition brings awareness to other adoptable pets, and reminds everyone that no matter what a dog or cat may look like, to their owners, they can always be the most beautiful pet in the world!
