Arizona Community Comes Together To Do Something Amazing For This Man With Cancer

The community spirit is alive in well in Tuscon, Arizona. It was especially apparent recently when a woman named Jennifer Simmons was forced to reach out to her friends and neighbors for help because her yard became a problem too big for her to handle on her own.

Jennifer’s husband was diagnosed with stage four laryngeal cancer in February of this year, and taking care of him has used up so much of Jennifer’s bandwidth that other things in her life have fallen by the wayside. On top of that, after her husband’s diagnoses, Jennifer was now the sole income provider for the family, and that meant picking up more hours, trying her best to hold everything together, and not worrying about things like the upkeep of her home and yard.

This became a problem however when two things happened, Jennifer needed to have a good home inspection so their lease would be renewed, and due to a particularly bad monsoon season on top of the families other struggles, the yard reached critical mass with waist high weeds and grass in some areas. Jennifer knew that even though it went against every instinct she had, that it was time to reach out to others for help.

She was not only embarrassed to reach out but worried to tell her husband, knowing he would be embarrassed as well. “He was the guy that worked six days a week and never stopped working, and when he was tired he was still working he did the yard.”

Despite their reservations though, Jennifer did the only thing she could and posted on Facebook asking if anyone could help them in their time of need. To her great surprise, over 100 people responded. Everyone from friends and neighbors to strangers who happened to see her post, came together to show this family that there is no shame in asking for help. As a community, they would make sure that Jennifer and her husband not only had a beautiful yard for themselves, but a yard that will pass inspection and ensure that they will not lose their home on top of their other worries.

One of the volunteers, Robert Romero, who also happens to be a close friend of Jennifer and her husband, said, “When someone has a situation they go through in life they never know how hard it’s going to be. Sometimes you need more than your wife, (you need) the community to pitch in.”

Pitch in they did, and the family themselves could not be more touched and amazed by the effort put in by everyone to help them. Jennifer said it had restored her faith in humanity that a community would come together to help a cancer stricken man and his wife keep their home and that they will be forever grateful.
