An adopted dog in Texas is not only relishing in her new home but also raising awareness to the fact that abandoning dogs is illegal.
Reagan Henderson and her boyfriend Zachary San Roman had recently decided to adopt a pet together. They went to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Texas to see if they could find a good match. They fell in love with a pup named Claira-Belle and instantly felt a connection with her. They renamed her KD and were so excited to be able to take her home. They had no idea the tragic past they were taking her away from.
KD proved herself to be an incredibly sweet dog and is constantly reminding her new favorite people of her presence by licking or nudging their hands. She just loves to spend time with her new family. When Henderson and San Roman found out their little KD’s past, they were even more grateful that they had found her.
KD was abandoned by her original family on the side of the road on a road that people frequently leave dogs. So frequently it is now video surveyed. In the video, a black car pulls over to the side of the road, and the man driving gets out. He opens up one of the passenger doors and yanks out a dog on a chain. He gets back in the car and drives away. Leaving the dog to wander helplessly. The video will make your heart hurt. Thankfully, because the area is surveyed, rescuers were able to get to her in time after seeing her tangled up in the bushes.
This all happened in early August. The surveillance video is set up to catch people committing crimes and bring them to justice. Authorities issued a warrant for the arrest of the man, and he ultimately turned himself in but not until a month and a half after the incident. His name was Gorge Sears, and he said that the dog had belonged to his sister. He thought it would be better to drop the dog off on the side of the road than a shelter. He was charged with animal cruelty. It’s almost as if the stars aligned for KD at that time because she was being adopted in that same moment.
Now KD is enjoying weekly trips to Petco to pick out different toys like a stuffed lamb and football. According to Henderson, KD will never have to worry about being on a chain again. The spokeswoman for SPCA of Texas, Victoria Albrecht, said seeing KD in her new home has brought a lot of joy to everyone at the shelter, and she is grateful that KD has found such a happy home. She hopes that KD’s story will bring awareness to different animal cruelty laws, and educate people on options if they feel they can no longer care for their pets.
I’m sure KD and her new family had no idea what impact this story would have on everyone. It’s just nice to see a happy ending for KD.
