Weddings take an incredible amount of planning, with everything from the wardrobe of the wedding party, the music selection, the food and beverages being served, right down to the speeches written well before being delivered, weddings are a time when most people do everything they can to avoid surprises.
This was the case when Clayton Cook said his vows to his new wife Brittany, everything had been planned well in advance, and the ceremony went off without a hitch. After the ceremony though, Clayton and Brittany got a reminder from life that you can’t plan everything.
The two were taking pictures, as is traditional after the ceremony and before the reception, enjoying their first moments as a blissfully married couple, and catching those moments on film to relive for the rest of their lives. Suddenly, however, a young boy who was nearby was pushed into the water of Victoria Lake Park in Kitchener, Ontario, where the photo shoot was taking place, and Clayton immediately took action to save him.
Clayton’s quick thinking and heroic actions have earned him fame from across the globe, with the story first being picked up locally, and then going viral. In an interview with CTV News, Clayton said, “His face was underwater, and he was fighting, like he was really fighting. Luckily, he was only a little guy … and I honestly just sort of hopped him up.”
His new wife Brittany, still getting used to the fact that she unknowingly married a hero, says, “We’d like to think most people would probably make the same choice.”
The couple’s wedding photographer captured the incident on film, explaining, “When I first saw what was going on, my first priority was to assess the situation, and I saw that Clay had things under control. Once I saw that the boy was out, I just fired off a few quick snaps from my hip, not even really expecting them to turn out, but they did, and I think they beautifully captured a moment that my couple will certainly never forget.”
